Our history

In 1940, even as the world was at war, the founders of our association recognized the fundamental need for entrepreneurs in Quebec's hardware and building materials world to band together to better defend and organize themselves.

1940 — Birth

On June 15, under the third part of the Quebec Companies Act, a petition was filed to obtain a charter incorporating the Montreal Lumber Dealers Association by letters patent.

1943 — Merger

On May 18, following an agreement between the Montreal Door, Window and Millwork Manufacturers Association and the Montreal Lumber Dealers Association, the two organizations merged. The supplementary letters patent were registered on June 15, 1943.

1953 — First name change

On January 13, following a petition to the Lieutenant-Governor of the province, the name became Quebec Retail Lumber Dealers Association.

1972 — Expansion to building materials

On February 17, the Quebec Ministry of Financial Institutions, Companies and Cooperatives approved the name change to Quebec Retail Lumber and Building Materials Dealers Association.

1984 — Refocus on building materials

On May 13, the Inspector General of Financial Institutions ratified a further name change to The Building Materials Retailers Association of Quebec.

2009 — Today: AQMAT

To better include manufacturers and the full range of players in the hardware field, on November 12, 2008 the Board of Directors selected a new name, ratified at the general meeting on March 15, 2009: Quebec Association of Hardware and Building Materials (AQMAT).

2015 — 75th anniversary

The Association's three-quarters of a century of existence was celebrated in grand style in 2015.

Our past, your future

Our directors, volunteers and staff survey, listen to and analyze members and industry observers. In light of these consultations, AQMAT proposes a future that — while embracing new technologies and today's realities — draws on the foundational values of yesteryear: hard work, loyalty, courage and plain common sense. We build on those foundations, with a constant concern to foster contact between suppliers and retailers, so as to keep our industry and our trade orderly and dynamic.
